We have all heard of the typical pregnancy cravings of pickles, chocolate or ice cream.
We’ve also heard about the silly ones like pickles with peanut butter or wanting to put hot sauce on everything! Sometimes pregnant people even crave things like sand or toothpaste!
Why do these cravings happen?
Why do these cravings happen? What does it mean?
Cravings typically is your body’s way of letting you know you need more of something. Your body and eating habits went from eating and supplying nutrients for one body to now needing extra nutrients to support your changing body and the growing baby. While you still have to mind what you eat, you will need to increase your calories and nutrients to support your pregnancy.
Is there something wrong if you don’t get any cravings?
Sometimes cravings are just merely situational. You may be out to eat and smell the honey BBQ wings the next table received and now you can’t get them off your brain even though you just finished your own meal!
What if you don’t get cravings?
Is is bad if you don’t get cravings?
Nope!
Usually if you go through pregnancy without cravings it’s because you’ve been eating a balanced diet and have increased your calories to satisfy you and your baby’s needs.
Just remember indulging here and there isn’t wrong but you want to make sure you are balancing it out with other healthy options. Have a scoop or two of ice cream but maybe think twice about a second helping?
If you’re still craving something sweet and cold try making a frozen fruit smoothie or turn it into a smoothie bowl with extra toppings. Try thinking of something with similar flavors or textures to satisfy those cravings.
