5 Ways to Positively Impact Your Birth Space

At Soulshine Doula Services, I specialize in providing exceptional local doula support, dedicated to supporting you
through one of life’s most beautiful and challenging experiences: childbirth and early parenthood.

A body in labor is using a multitude of different hormones to move the process along.

What happens if we disrupt this flow of hormones? Stress hormones have the tendency to slow down or stop the physiological process of labor.

In nature this reaction is to ensure the safety of the animal by allowing them to get up and move to avoid any harm.

We have systems set up to provide a safety net for us whether it is at the hospital or at another birthing space with a midwife. Even with this in place our bodies still react to when we feel scared or anxious and potentially slow down labor.

So what can we do?

You can start by contacting me and together, we can start planning  your ideal birth space.

Mood lighting in dim room

1. Dim the lights

Whether you are at home, a birthing center or a hospital take a moment to dim the lights. If you or your doula has battery operated candles, scatter them around the room. It may help increase the necessary hormones for labor.

2. Put on Calming Music

Choose a playlist playlist that speaks to you! What types of music help you calm down when you are stressed out? Adding music to your birth space can greatly impact your coping abilities.

3. Limit the amount of people entering the room

Plan with your doula and then speak to the nurses and providers about how often they come in. It is hard to rest or concentrate in your birth space when people are in and out.

4. Set Boundaries

Try to limit who and how often others can contact you. Set expectations of communication with family and friends including social media. Designate your partner or doula to be the point of contact for others.

5. Make it your own

The most important thing is to make the birth space your own. Bring in your own comfort items. Create your own playlist and only have the people that you want there.
