How Can Partners Support When Breastfeeding*?
Breastfeeding can be hard! When starting off both mom* and baby are clumsy and quick to frustrate. Baby is hungry while trying to learn how to latch and swallow all while mom is rushing trying to physically support baby, get a correct latch and wait on the milk to begin to flow. Just like pregnancy and birth, each persons breastfeeding journey is different. What is similar for each person is the need for support along the way whether it comes in the form of a partner, a trusted friend or a professional.
Here you will find the top 6 ways you can support a breastfeeding parent!
1. Set them up for success. Help designate a comfortable spot that can be used for breastfeeding. Is there a chair in the baby’s room? Maybe a cozy spot in the living room? Or is the bed the easiest spot to breastfeed?
2. Think about the atmosphere of the room. Can it get a little chilly or stuffy? Have a blanket or small fan accessible. Are there pillows such as a Boppy to help relieve mom’s arms? Typically having low lighting and minimal noise can also create a space with little distraction. This can be very helpful during the middle of the night to not cause too much stimulation!
3. Proper hydration is absolutely key in breastfeeding! Keeping a water bottle within reach will be beneficial for comfort and minimize the times mom has to get up. Breastfeeding can make a person very thirsty!
4. Snacks! Not only will the mom be thirsty they may also need reminders to keep up with the calories. If possible set aside some snacks, such as protein bars, granola, etc. in an accessible spot.
5. Creature comforts. Sometimes breastfeeding can take a long time and mom is with the baby for an hour or more! This can feel excruciatingly long so having their phone, TV remote or book can help pass the time. Don’t forget the charger!
6. Overall support. As their partner, you can take the time to learn about breastfeeding, advocate for them when out in public, cheer them on when things get tough, help find a breastfeeding professional and take on some more household tasks!
There are many ways that a partner can support a breastfeeding parent. Don’t forget to ask what you can do to help!
*I have used the terms “breastfeeding” and “mom” but acknowledge that these terms are not exclusive to the feeding experience.
